Event Description:
The Schmidt art exhibition highlights nature and hand-made forms
View the natural world, human form and a touch of the macabre through the work of
St. Louis and Midwestern artists on display from Thursday, Jan. 18 to Friday, Feb. 23 at the William and Florence Schmidt Art Center at Southwestern Illinois College, 2500 Carlyle Ave., Belleville.
A public reception featuring artist talks will take place from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18.
“This exhibition offers area residents a unique view of both hand-made and mass-produced views of natural objects and the human form ranging from drawings of flowers to macabre carnival chalkware,” said Schmidt Curator Nicole Dutton.
St. Louis area painter Ann Scheumbauer’s drawings and paintings record the energy and movement of nature’s forms as they blossom, wither and dry, in her collection titled “Dance of Nature.” She draws inspiration from Monet’s garden in Giverny, France, the Missouri Botanical Garden and Achill Island, Ireland.
“Top Shelf Eyes,” Mark Appling Fisher’s collection of photographs, examines the chalkware and macabre culture of the early to mid-20th century carnivals. Based in St. Louis, Fisher has been a part of more than 120 local, regional and national exhibits and has had more than 20 one-person shows in the last 10 years.
Hand-sculpted art dolls that explore the complexities of human nature through gesture and expression are the focus of Lyubov Briginets’ exhibition titled “The Magic of Art Dolls.” The Russian-born American artist and teacher experiments with different ways of visual expression and various art media.
This exhibition also affords the Schmidt Art Center the opportunity to show off its collection of works by the late painter Lawton Parker. The etchings and aquatints by this American impressionist provide a subtle impression of the human form.
